Department of Statistics, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria was established in October 2016. Prior to the establishment of the department, undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in Statistics are mounted under the Department of Mathematics, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, which was established in October 1962. In the early 1970’s, the Department of Mathematics was mainly offering combined honours degrees such as B.Sc. Mathematics with Physics, B.Sc. Mathematics with Computer Science, B.Sc. Mathematics with Statistics and B.Sc. single honours programme in Mathematics.
However, Statistics and Computer Science programmes got discontinued due to lack of manpower in early 1990’s. B.Sc. (Hons) in Mathematics with Computer Science was resuscitated in 2001 with eight students selected from the B.Sc. (Hons) Mathematics. Also, B.Sc. (Hons) Statistics programme was introduced during the 2001/2002 academic session. M.Sc. and Ph.D. programmes in Statistics and Computer Science were also revived during the same session.
