HOD, Department of Geography and Environmental Management
Welcome to the Department of Geography and Environmental Management, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. Our teaching and research are centred on the environment with specialisations in the following areas; Remote Sensing and GIS, Environment Management, Transport Management, Rural Development as well as Population and demographic Studies. We are blessed with seasoned and hardworking academics that are specialists in the various fields. Little wonder that the Department has continued to attract young people and promising scholars from different fields, either for academic pursuit, research collaborations and or consultations. It is also worthy to note that graduates from several fields have been attracted to the Department for our various Postgraduate programmes, with a view to either better their chances for employment opportunities or to consolidate their position in their places of work. The results have been that many have successfully graduated and gained employment or rose to higher positions in places like Federal and State Ministries of Environment, the Nigerian Army, National Space Research and Development Agency, National Population Commission, Nigerian Metrological Agency, Nigerian Institute for Transport Technology, Universities and many higher institutions of learning within and outside the country, to mention a few.
The Department is also the host to two important University based Centres which are Centre for Disaster Risk Management and Development Studies and Centre for Climate Change and Development. These have open vistas of opportunities for staff and students in the Department. Furthermore, staff-student relation is friendly, and undergraduates run the socially and academically active National Association of Geography and Environmental Management Students (NAGS), ABU Chapter.
