Process of establishing ABU Sports Centre of Excellence almost concluded ---CAA

The process of establishing a world class sports centre in Ahmadu Bello University is almost concluded, President of the Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) Region II, Engr. Ibrahim Shehu-Gusau, said in Zaria today.

Speaking at the ongoing championships of the Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) holding in Ahmadu Bello University, Samaru, Zaria, Shehu-Gusau said that what had happened in the last two days of the championships was a testimony to the fact that the regional sports body was not wrong in selecting ABU as host of the event.

Shehu-Gusau, who is also President of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), explained that CAA Region II was introducing more innovations into the organization of events in its calendar. For the first time, he said, a marathon had been added to the programme, in addition to more intiatives on the drawing board.

"My intention and policy for Region II is to see member federations dominate Africa and the world in terms of performance and achievement", he said.
He said that of the 15 countries within the Region II, eight competed in the championships.
Those that participated are Nigeria, Ghana, Benin,  Senegal, Guinea Bissau, Burkina Faso, Niger and Sierra Leone.

Shehu-Gusau also said that the championship was not all about winning but also for solidarity, sportsmanship, bridge building, and most importantly, to foster and enhance unity and friendship among citizens of Member States, especially the athletes of Region II.

He assured that as President of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria and also of Confederation of African Athletics Region II he would always ensure that such championships were organized every year.

In his speech, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Kabir Bala, thanked the regional sports body for granting the University the privilege to host the championships.

Prof Bala also said that the championships had brought a lot of goodwill to the University in terms of social interaction, economic development as well as reassurance of providing adequate facilities to the institution.

The Vice-Chancellor thanked the Honourable Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Mr Sunday Dare for allowing the event to be hosted in ABU, Zaria.

He equally thanked His Excellency the Governor of Kaduna State and his Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development for supporting the University with some technical equipment for the championships.

Prof Bala further expressed gratitude to His Highness, the Emir of Zazzau, Alhaji Ahmad Nuhu Bamalli, who personally flagged off the half-marathon.
