GEOG101: INTRODUCTION TO HUMAN GEOGRAPHY (2 CU) :

The scope of human geography and its relation to physical geography: World population: Its distribution and patterns of growth; demographic characteristics of selected populations. Human settlements: evolution of settlements; types of settlement patterns, functions of rural and urban settlements and their interrelationships. Environmental resources: the concept of resources as an interplay between environment and human cultures; types of resources and their global distribution; relationship between resources and population distribution.

GEOG102: MAN, LOCATION AND RESOURCES (2 CU) :

Production systems: primary, secondary, tertiary and quaternary activities; impact of human activities on the environment at varying levels of technology and densities of population. The role of movement; flows of people, goods, energy and ideas; types, causes and consequences of population movements, basis and patterns of world trade; development of global communication systems.

GEOG103: MAN’S PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENTAL 1 (2 CU) :

The composition and structure of the lithosphere, atmosphere and hydrosphere. Nature, distribution, evolution and significance of the First Order Relief Forms of the earth. The Earth’s radiation balance and thermal environments. Global hydrological cycle.

GEOG104: MAN’S PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT II (2 CU) :

Earth’s composition and structure; rock types their origins and characteristics, rock cycle and ‘heatflow’ the cycling of matter and energy in the ecosystem, composition and structure of ecosystem; soil as the medium of plant growth, the cycling of principal gases, nutrients and water. Productivity of the earth’s major terrestrial ecosystem.

GEOG105: INTRODUCTION TO PRACTICAL GEOGRAPHY (2 CU) :

Concept of location. Map scales, enlargement and reduction of scales. Representation and recognition of relief forms and cultural features. Simple interpretation of topographic and cultural features on maps and their spatial analysis.

GEOG106: INTRODUCTION TO ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE (2 CU) :

Environmental processes: Energy transfers and the basis of life. Resources: The distribution and use of renewable and non-renewable resources. Industrialization – the environmental problems that arise from population growth, urbanization and industrialization. Management – The resolution of the demands placed upon the environment.

GEOG107: ZARIA AND ITS REGION (2 CU) :

An introduction to the Greater Zaria area to illustrate the concept of the region. Elements of the economy and culture, production, land use, population distribution and growth. The settlement patterns in rural and urban areas. Historical evolution of Zaria and the nature of rural-urban relations. Industrialization, urban expansion and the predicament of agriculture.

GEOG108: ELEMENTARY STATISTICS FOR GEOGRAPHERS (2 CU) :

What is statistics? Functions of statistics. Place of statistics in research. Review of algebraic operations. Subscripts and summations. Data description and characteristics. Frequency distributions and graphic presentation. Measures of central tendency and variability. Methods of sampling.

GEOG112: INTRODUCTION TO CARTOGRAPHY (2 CU) :

This course introduces students to Cartographic techniques: the principles of map design, drawing and lettering. Choropleth and isopleth mapping. The concept of map reduction and map enlargement. Quantitative statistical mapping, graphs and dispersion diagrams. Landscape interpretation: the physical landscape, the human landscape, urban and rural settlements and landuse. Aerial photograph interpretation: basic principles of air photos, identification of features on aerial photo, aerial photo interpretation.
