The Analytical and Environmental Chemistry Group focuses on quality assessment of the environment through
the study of water, air, soil, plant and animal foods. Our research priority is to use analytical tools and
methods in improving precision in data collection, analysis and interpretation.
Our research thrusts include:
- Studies of chemical composition of indigenous plants and animal foods; determination of chemical/biochemical
antioxidants and antimicrobials as well as antinutritional factors of plant foods and herbal products; in vivo
evaluations of heavy metal detoxification using herbal formulated supplements.
- Analysis of solid minerals; quantitative leaching and extraction of metals from ores; analysis of bio-medical
materials and their modifications for improved biocompatibility; in vitro and in vivo corrosion inhibition of
metallic implants.
- Method development; analysis of pharmaceutical preparations for contaminants; determination of pesticide
residues and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in foods and plant products and in the environment.
- Assessment of pollution levels in dam waters; assessment of ground water and treated water quality;
distribution and partitioning of trace elements in river sediments.
- Dumpsites pollution impact assessment in various cities across Nigeria; assessment of heavy metal
pollution in cities associated with mining activities; determination of pollutants in air and street dust
across Nigerian cities.
- Renewable forces of energy; optimization of biodiesel production from waste cooking oil and non-edible
oils; characterisation of the biodiesels and comparative studies of fuel characteristics; biogas production
from waste biomass.
- Bioremediation of contaminated soil using emulsifier (liquid soap), NPK fertilizer and microbial treatment;
removal of heavy metals from contaminated soils using complexing agents; assessment and comparative studies of
heavy metals speciation and remediation in rivers; soil characteristics, mobility and phytoremediation of toxic
metals from the environment.
- Synthesis and characterization of nanoparticles in drug delivery and bone implants.
