MSc Remote Sensing and Geographic Information System
Philosophy
The desire to mount this post graduate programme is borne out of the desire to train skilled manpower that
are capable of obtaining and using remotely sensed data in the monitoring and management of environmental
resources. Geographic Information System has become a vital tool in Earth resource management.
The graduates of this programme are expected to use their knowledge of RS & GIS in managing our resources
optimally.
Preamble
The programme consists of course work and Thesis. Courses normally involve lectures, laboratory work,
seminar/workshop and field work pursued on full-time basis. Upon registration, every candidate shall pursue
the programme for not less than Twenty four (24) calendar months, which implies that both course work and
Thesis run simultaneously. Students may be required to take special or remedial undergraduate courses to
make up for deficiencies where such exist. Candidates will be required to take a minimum workload of 36
credit units (including 12 credit units for Thesis).
Objective
The programme is designed to produce professionals in the field or Remote Sensing and GIS. Candidates shall
be trained to be well grounded not only in concepts, theories and principles, but also in relevant skills
and practical field experiences in Remote Sensing and Geographic Information System applications.
The products of the course are therefore intended to fill a critical and growing need for skilled manpower
in the area of Remote Sensing applications in Nigeria.
Entry Requirements
The minimum qualification for admission into the programmes is any of the following:
1. Minimum of Second Class lower Divisions in Geography of Ahmadu Bello University or of any other
recognized University.
2. Minimum of Second Class Lower Divisions in any cognate discipline including Urban and Regional
Planning, Physical Sciences, Engineering, Agricultural Science, Social Sciences, Information Science and
Environmental sciences of Ahmadu Bello University or any other recognized University.
Duration
The programme will run on a Full Time basis of 24 calendar months.
Evaluation
i. All the course units in the programmes, with the exception of the practical and field exercises which
shall be continuously assessed, shall be examined at specific times as determined by the Department.
ii. All candidates shall submit a research Thesis, which shall be externally examined.
iii. To be awarded the M.Sc degree in RS & GIS, a candidate shall be required to pass all prescribed course
(with a minimum score of 50%) and submit a thesis.

Note: Students are required to pass all course units and accumulate a minimum of 36 credit units.
