MSc. Environmental Management
Philosophy
The desire to mount this postgraduate programme is borne out of the desire to train skilled manpower that
is capable of monitoring and managing our environment. Our environment is plagued by a myriad of
environmental hazards-some man made and some natural. Some of these hazards have devastating consequences
on man his livelihood.
Preamble
The proper management of the environment is the centre of sustainable development. There is growing
awareness in commercial organizations, government departments, NGOs and other agencies that there is need
for an “appropriately trained, highly skilled and environmentally aware workforce” to respond to the
challenges of sustainable development. Skill and knowledge are being sought on matters such as
environmental planning and legislation, waste management and organization, environmental impact assessment
and auditing, etc. A course in environmental management, which provides a curriculum that allows students
to gain a fuller understanding of a variety of environmental policy and planning issues, as well as a range
of practical skills, is undoubtedly what is required.
This course covers key issues and concepts formed around sustainability and management, planning and
practice. It is designed to meet the need for environmental managers in a range of organizations, industry
and consultancies. Environmental Managers are foremost in tackling problems such as climate change,
pollution, water provisions, waste disposal, as well as the degradation of soil, aquatic resources and
wildlife habitats. It is relevant to those who are concern with the management of resources and making and
implementation of policies that have an environmental impact.
The module offered on the programme allow students to develop skill in the collection, processing and
analysis of environmental data, the use of data in the development and evaluation of policy, and a sound
practical training in techniques of environmental management.
Objectives of the Programme
This programme leads to the following learning outcomes for students:
- An understanding of the scientific principles that underpin environmental management;
- An understanding of the economic, social, political and legal framework for environmental management;
- A sound training in relevant practical, investigative research and generic skills on how natural
resources and the environment are appraised, allocated, used, protected, restored, monitored and evaluated.
Duration
The Master’s Degree Programme consists of course work and research project. Courses normally involve
lecture, laboratory work, seminar/workshop and field work pursued on full-time basis. However, candidates
may choose to revert to part-time status after the completion of required course work, but not earlier
than 24 calendar months after registration, and in conformation with relevant postgraduate school
regulation. After registration, every full-time candidate for the Master degree shall pursue the programme
for not less than twenty four (24) calendar months.
Entry Requirement
To get into the course, a candidate needs
i. a minimum of second class lower honors degree, normally in science or Engineering disruptive.
Assessment
i. The programme consists of lecture courses, and a written original thesis.
ii. Workshops and practical (field and laboratory based) sessions and field trip are tied to the
appropriate individual courses and provide a vital forum for acquisition of relevant skills.
iii. Students may be required to take special or remedial postgraduate or undergraduate courses for
which they may not get any postgraduate credit.
Evaluation and Award
All the course units in the programme, which shall be continuously assessed, shall be examined at
specified times as determined by the Department. To be awarded M.Sc. degree in Environmental Management,
student must:
i. accumulate no fewer than 36 credit units, of which 12 must have been awarded in respect of the thesis;
ii. scored minimum final mark of 50% across all classes of the taught component of the programme,
iii. Passed the original research Masters thesis submitted and which was subjected to external examination.
