MSc. Environmental Management

Philosophy
The desire to mount this postgraduate programme is borne out of the desire to train skilled manpower that is capable of monitoring and managing our environment. Our environment is plagued by a myriad of environmental hazards-some man made and some natural. Some of these hazards have devastating consequences on man his livelihood.

Preamble
The proper management of the environment is the centre of sustainable development. There is growing awareness in commercial organizations, government departments, NGOs and other agencies that there is need for an “appropriately trained, highly skilled and environmentally aware workforce” to respond to the challenges of sustainable development. Skill and knowledge are being sought on matters such as environmental planning and legislation, waste management and organization, environmental impact assessment and auditing, etc. A course in environmental management, which provides a curriculum that allows students to gain a fuller understanding of a variety of environmental policy and planning issues, as well as a range of practical skills, is undoubtedly what is required.

This course covers key issues and concepts formed around sustainability and management, planning and practice. It is designed to meet the need for environmental managers in a range of organizations, industry and consultancies. Environmental Managers are foremost in tackling problems such as climate change, pollution, water provisions, waste disposal, as well as the degradation of soil, aquatic resources and wildlife habitats. It is relevant to those who are concern with the management of resources and making and implementation of policies that have an environmental impact.
The module offered on the programme allow students to develop skill in the collection, processing and analysis of environmental data, the use of data in the development and evaluation of policy, and a sound practical training in techniques of environmental management.
